When a submersible pump stops, the first reaction is usually to pull it immediately — an expensive mistake. Many faults originate in the control panel, the cable or a dropping water level and have nothing to do with the pump. At MEIC we begin with inspection and measurement, and we only pull the pump once the readings show the fault is genuinely inside it.
Common faults and their real causes
The symptoms a client describes usually point to more than one possible cause, and correct diagnosis is what saves both time and money.
- Pump runs but no water: The water level may have dropped below the pump, the non-return valve may have failed, or the stages may be worn by sand.
- Breaker keeps tripping: Usually overload, an earth fault in the cable or degraded motor insulation — and sometimes simply wrong settings in the panel itself.
- Burnt motor: Most often caused by dry running, unprotected voltage fluctuation, and repeated starting and stopping within a short period.
- Sandy water: A sign of a problem in the well itself — screens or gravel pack — not in the pump. Treating it by swapping the pump alone simply repeats the failure.
- Gradually falling output: Worn stages, partial blockage in the riser, or declining well yield.
How we diagnose
We follow a fixed order that starts with the cheapest and fastest checks: inspecting the control panel and voltage across all three phases, then measuring cable and motor insulation resistance, then measuring the water level in the well. None of this requires pulling the pump, and it identifies a large share of faults.
If the readings do point to a fault inside the pump or motor, we then pull it with our own equipment, strip and inspect it, and present you with a report and the options — repair or replace, with an indicative cost for each — before we carry out any work.
Preventive maintenance beats emergencies
Most of the emergencies we are called to could have been avoided by a simple periodic check. Preventive maintenance covers measuring current and voltage against the original commissioning figures, testing cable insulation, monitoring well level and yield, and verifying that the panel protections still work.
We deliver these checks under periodic maintenance contracts for farms, facilities and compounds — far cheaper than an unplanned shutdown at peak demand.
What drives maintenance cost
Cost depends on the nature and source of the fault, the pump's setting depth (which dictates the pulling effort and equipment), the pump size and capacity, the parts needed and their availability, the site location and travel distance, and whether the call-out is urgent or outside working hours.
