How a well is executed
A well is an engineered structure, not a hole in the ground. Its stages follow one another, and skipping any of them shows up later as poor yield, persistent sand or partial collapse.
- Study and siting: Assessing the site and the available data on the area's water-bearing formations before any rig moves, to reduce the chance of a non-productive well.
- Drilling: Choosing the drilling method and diameter according to the formations encountered and the target depth.
- Casing and screens: Installing casing with screens set against the producing formations, with graded gravel pack where required to keep sand out.
- Development and cleaning: Pumping and cleaning until the water runs clear and yield stabilises — the stage most often cut short, with the pump paying the price later.
- Pumping test: Measuring flow and dynamic water level to establish the well's true capacity, which is the basis for pump selection.
- Pump installation and commissioning: Setting the submersible pump and control panel, starting the system and handing over the operating readings.
Rehabilitating existing wells
A low-yielding well is not necessarily a finished one. Many wells decline over time because the screens clog with deposits, sand accumulates at the bottom, or the casing corrodes — conditions that can usually be treated by cleaning and development at a fraction of the cost of a new well.
