Choosing a well drilling contractor shapes the life of your well more than any other single factor. A well built on a proper survey, with suitable casing and adequate development, keeps producing for years. A well drilled in a hurry may give water in the first week and then lose yield or collapse. This guide explains how to evaluate a contractor before signing, what must appear in the technical proposal, and which signs mean you should look elsewhere.
Why do some wells fail?

Failure is rarely a geological surprise. In most cases it traces back to decisions taken before the rig arrived on site, or during well completion. The recurring causes are:
Picking the drilling location by eye, or by copying a neighbouring well, with no geophysical survey.
Casing that cannot take the formation pressure or resist local water salinity.
Screen slots that do not match the grain size of the water-bearing formation, letting sand into the well.
Skipping the gravel pack, or installing one sized wrong for the screen.
Handing over the well without adequate development, leaving mud and fines around the screen.
No pumping test to establish real yield before selecting the pump.
First: licensing and legal paperwork
Well drilling in the Kingdom is a regulated activity, and a serious contractor starts with paperwork rather than machinery. Ask for proof that the company is properly qualified for this activity and that the well will be executed under the approved procedures of the competent authority. A contractor who offers to skip permits exposes you first, and leaves your well without legal standing in any future dispute or land sale.

A clear, written commitment to complete the required permits in the owner's name.
A written contract defining scope, duration and responsibilities.
Insurance cover for the crew and equipment while on your site.
Second: survey before the rig
Any company that proposes a drilling location before running a survey is gambling with your money. A geophysical survey reads formation resistivity and indicates the likely position and approximate depth of the aquifer, reducing the risk of a dry or weak well. Ask for the survey report in writing, and agree in advance what changes in the plan if actual conditions differ from expectations during drilling, and who carries the cost of that difference.
Third: what belongs in the technical proposal
A good proposal describes work, not just a price. Compare offers by what they include, not by the final figure on the page, because the cheapest offer is usually the one that dropped an item you will pay for later. Look explicitly for:
The proposed drilling method and why it suits the expected formations.
Planned drilling diameter and final casing diameter.
Casing type and specification, screen type and installation method.
Gravel pack details and the sanitary grout seal at the top of the well.
The well development method and duration, and the criterion for clear water.
A pumping test with written results handed over.
What is explicitly outside the contract, such as electrical works or site preparation.
Fourth: casing and screen materials
Casing is the structure that keeps the borehole wall standing; the screen is the gate that lets water in and keeps sand out. Both should be selected from well depth, formation type and water quality, not from whatever sits in the contractor's yard. Ask a specific question: why this material for my case? A convincing answer discusses formation, pressure and salinity. A weak one says simply that this is what they always use.
Fifth: development and pumping test
Once drilling and casing are finished, the step many skip begins: well development. Its purpose is to pull mud and suspended fines away from the screen until the water runs clear and the flow stabilises. The pumping test follows, and it is what actually tells you what your well yields and where the water level settles during operation. Those two facts are the basis for pump selection later; without them, pump selection is expensive guesswork.
Questions to ask before signing
What happens if we do not reach the expected quantity of water, and who bears the cost?
Does the price include casing, screen and development, or are these billed separately later?
How many days for execution, and what could delay it?
Who is the resident technical supervisor, and what is their experience in these formations?
How long is the warranty, and what exactly does it cover and exclude?
Will I receive a final report with the formation log and pumping test results?
Red flags
A price far below the others with no explanation of what was removed from scope.
Refusal to provide a written contract.
A guaranteed yield promised before drilling and testing.
Dismissing the permits question as unimportant.
No comparable past work and no reference you can contact.
Practical summary
Do not choose a contractor because they are cheapest or fastest, but because they are clearest. The contractor who writes down the plan, explains the choices and agrees to hand over the reports is the one who actually reduces your risk. A well is a long-term asset, and the cost difference between a considered offer and a rushed one is usually recovered at the first breakdown you avoid.
